The Pigment Change
Romero, Almudena
“I don’t use photography to document the facts. It’s not about taking a photo, it’s about cultivating it. The photo is alive! “, explains Almudena Romero. 2020 winner of the BMW Residency at Gobelins Paris, the Spanish photographer takes the etymology “writing with light” literally. For her project The Pigment Change, she exposed plants to specific amounts of light and particular wavelengths. In his work, no pixels or even grain, only chlorophyll. Thus, it forms a literally living work, but also ephemeral. The result is absolutely unique images that undermine traditional conceptions of photography – ultimately doomed to disappearance, because they are very polluting. “I explore shapes and materials as part of a broader reflection on sustainability,” she continues.
