La Performatividad de las Imágenes

SOTO CALDERON,ANDREA

The unease that manifests itself in various forms throughout this book concerns the ambivalent power of images, a persistent attempt to shift the question of what images are toward how they act, their performativity. Traditionally, the image has been declared unfit to criticize reality, while today it is claimed that we are immersed in a visual culture that demands orientation. Although most circulating images are meant to sell objects rather than construct ways of seeing, this does not mean they cease to be artifacts of speculative, poetic, and political power. This text is an invitation to maintain a critical attitude that enables the emergence of new types of conflicts and new ways of seeing. From a kind of counter-intuition, it asserts that the problem is not so much the excess of images but their scarcity: those realities that have no images, that lack the capacity to be imagined. It is an exhortation to compose other forms of power, to connect what has no connection, exercising together the power that is shared.
