Historias De La Fotografía Española. 1977-2004

Fontcuberta, Joan

Joan Fontcuberta has played a key multifaceted role in the Spanish photographic scene, and his fruitful artistic production is complemented by a no less prolific work of critical reflection and historiographic research. Despite not considering himself a professional historian, nor even a specialist, the texts that Fontcuberta has published since the mid-1970s on different aspects of Spanish photography have contributed to shaping the models with which we interpret its evolution today. This book gathers a long series of writings—some more journalistic in tone, others with greater theoretical depth—that Jorge Ribalta has selected as a compendium of sources. These sources are of interest not only for their content but also for the collateral metadata they provide regarding the cultural and political contexts in which they were produced, as well as the implicit agendas to which they were subordinated. Ultimately, these texts reflect both curiosity and a desire to disseminate knowledge, as well as a wish to influence cultural policies and public opinion. Balancing activism and passionate scholarship, deliberately far from academic coldness, Fontcuberta outlines in this volume the journey of a pioneering effort to articulate plausible narratives about the past and present of Spanish photography.
