Beyond Photography: The Transformed Image

Tait, Jack

The conventional photographic image may serve only as a starting point for a wide variety of special manipulative processes, yielding striking images with distinct qualities that cannot be attained by any other means. With such processes, beyond the range of orthodox photography, each print is special in its own way - an individual work of art. With his clear-cut technical guid-ance, Jack Tait shows how you can use the creative ideas suggested by the methods themselves to evolve new forms, and he points to relatively unexplored avenues along which the photographer or artist may experiment. The methods employed include lithography, silk screen printing, etching, toning, colour modification, combined multiple printing and photo-collage. Some of the results have been used for commercial purposes as photo murals, wallpaper, fabric and table-top designs - as well as providing original fine prints for exhibitions.
