Historical Techniques: Introduction
CÉLICA VÉLIZ
Duration
12 horurs
Starting Date
October 2
price
150€
In this course we are going to practice various manual photographic printing techniques. These techniques are part of the so-called alternative photographic processes. Actually, this is the name given to photographic copying methods that mostly date back to the 19th century. They allow paper and other surfaces to be covered with different sensitive materials to copy images on them through the action of light on the applied chemicals. In these processes, the light-sensitive coating is prepared by hand and applied to different supports to then copy images by contact. You can work with images obtained with any camera, frames or drawings. All this makes these techniques very versatile when working on different photographic projects. In this course we will cover the theory of the techniques, discover how to obtain digital negatives, and explore three printing techniques: Van Dyke Brown, salted paper, and albumen printing.
Each session will focus on a new technique with pre-recorded materials and technical documentation that will lead us to discover the processes with which photography began.

OCTOBER 7
INTRODUCTION: Historical Printing Photographic Techniques
History. Historical references and current projects. Chemicals that make up light-sensitive solutions, how to prepare them and where to get them. Safety rules. Photographic negatives (analogue) of different formats. Digital negatives: graphic film and transparencies for inkjet and laser. Negative preparation in Photoshop for various techniques. The supports. Quality of the papers. Accessories for alternative processes. Sunlight and artificial light. How to build a simple artificial UV light.
OCTOBER 14
VAN DYKE BROWN on Paper and Canvas
The Van Dyke Brown Process is a method of contact printing photographs and other images, using ferric ammonia citrate and silver nitrate as raw materials that produce shades of brown. This technique is named after the painter Anton Van Dyck as the resulting tones are reminiscent of his colour palette.

SALTED PAPER PRINT: Technique, History and Current References
Salted paper print is a process for making copies by contact. The chosen support is prepared with salt so that it subsequently receives a layer of silver nitrate, transforming it into light-sensitive silver chloride. The light, coming into contact through a negative with the sensitized paper, forms the image.
NOVEMBER 4
ALBUMIN COPY. Silver nitrate techniques
In this case, the support is prepared with albumen (egg white), which previously went through a salting process. The albumen-coated surfaces are then coated with silver nitrate solution to make them light-sensitive. The image is formed on the surface of the albumen, resulting in a brilliant copy, with great definition and depth in tones.

Photographer, Visual Arts Teacher, and Ceramics Technician. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She trained in the city of Tandil at IPAT and the School of Ceramics. Upon completing her studies, she became interested in 19th-century photographic techniques and began to research and experiment with them. Currently, she coordinates workshops on experimental photography and alternative photographic processes in her virtual space "Superficies Sensibles" and at the Ágora del ExpFestival. Since 2023, she has been the director of the artistic residency at the Experimental Photo Festival (Barcelona). She has held several solo exhibitions in museums and galleries in her country. She has also participated in group exhibitions and festivals in Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Spain. She has published the mini-books "MADER" (2014), "El Cuerpo Roto" (2019), and "Las Vías de Escape" (2020). Her work mainly addresses autobiography, self-portraiture, the editing of photographic zines, storytelling through images about the body and illness, family ties, as well as experimentation with materiality, media, and various techniques without limiting herself to ancient processes.
